Map areas are hexagons about 350 meters (roughly 3 to 4 blocks) across. Complaint locations come from the city's data, grouped to about 100 meters before mapping. We sort complaint types into 12 categories.
Privacy rules. Any block or street count below 10 reports in a category is shown as "Not enough reports to show", and map areas with fewer than 10 reports in total are left off the map. Housing reports (apartment conditions and no heat / hot water) and rat reports are shown at ZIP and neighborhood level only, never for a block or street, and aren't counted in block or street totals.
What's counted. Citywide totals include every report. ZIP totals include every report with a NYC ZIP code (99% of reports). Block and neighborhood counts include only reports the city placed on the map (98% overall, but only about 44% of pothole reports, because many are filed for a whole stretch of street).
Scores and sliders. Scores compare an area with others of the same kind: 0 means fewer complaints than almost everywhere, 100 (or 10 on the sliders) means more than almost everywhere. Blocks need at least complaints a year to be ranked, ZIPs need 2,000+ residents and 1,000+ complaints, and neighborhoods need 1,000+ complaints (residential areas only).
What we changed: grouped complaint types into 12 categories, counted complaints by area and time, matched locations to hexagons, ZIPs and neighborhoods, and calculated percentiles and medians. We don't edit individual records.
urbanranks is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the City of New York, NYC 311, NYC Open Data, or any government agency. Data source: NYC Open Data, "311 Service Requests from 2020 to Present" (dataset erm2-nwe9), retrieved Nov 2, 2026. We aggregate, filter, and score this data. Scores are our own and are not City figures. "NYC 311" is a trademark of the City of New York, used here only to identify the data source. No government logos or seals are used.
Complaints in the 311 service-request data are reports from the public, not verified facts. The city doesn't guarantee the data's accuracy, and a place with few complaints might just have neighbors who don't call 311. Scores and rankings describe complaint volume only and say nothing about any person, business, or property owner.
Privacy: no ads, analytics, tracking pixels or cookies on this site. If you sign up for the monthly update, we keep your email, your ZIP code if you add one, and the signup time. "Near me" uses your location only inside your browser and never sends it anywhere. The street map loads from CARTO's servers, which receive normal request details such as your IP address. Full privacy notice
Add your ZIP code and once a month you'll get a short, plain-English summary of it: where it ranks, what people complained about most, what changed since last month, and how it compares with ZIP codes that rank close to it. Leave the ZIP blank and you'll get the citywide update instead.
The first update hasn't gone out yet. Join the list now and we'll email you to confirm before it does.
What we collect. Nothing, unless you sign up for the monthly update. If you sign up, we collect your email address, your ZIP code if you choose to give one, and the time you signed up. We use them only to send the monthly urbanranks update: a summary for your ZIP code, or the citywide update if you leave the ZIP blank. Your signup is stored with our site host, Cloudflare. We don't store your IP address with it. We don't sell or share your information.
Email status. No emails are being sent yet, and no confirmation email has been sent. Before the first update, we'll email you once to confirm that you want it. Signups that aren't confirmed within 30 days of that email are deleted. We won't send any email until a mailing address for urbanranks is posted on this site, and every email will include that address and an unsubscribe link.
No tracking. This site has no ads, analytics, tracking pixels or cookies. Our emails will contain no tracking pixels, and links in them won't be tracked.
Technical data. Cloudflare, which hosts this site, processes technical data such as IP address and browser type to deliver and protect it. The signup form briefly uses your IP address to block abuse (too many tries in a short time); it is not saved with your signup. The street map loads from CARTO's servers, which receive normal request details such as your IP address. "Near me" uses your location only inside your browser and never sends it anywhere.
Unsubscribing and deletion. Every email will have an unsubscribe link. When you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you within 10 business days and delete your email address and ZIP code within 30 days. You can also email privacy@urbanranks.com to ask about or delete your data at any time. We'll reply within 30 days. We protect your data with reasonable safeguards.
Keeping your data. We keep your email address and ZIP code only while you're signed up, and delete them as described above.
Who helps us. Cloudflare (hosting and signup storage, United States) and CARTO (street-map tiles). Email provider: [PROVIDER TO BE NAMED BEFORE FIRST EMAIL]. We haven't chosen one yet, and no signup data goes to an email provider until it is named here.
Links to other sites. The @UrbanRanks link goes to our account on X (x.com). X has its own privacy policy and terms. We don't embed X posts, buttons or scripts on this site, so X receives nothing from your visit unless you follow the link.
Do Not Track. We don't track visitors across websites or let others do so on urbanranks, so we treat every visitor the same whether or not their browser sends a Do Not Track signal.
Children. You must be 13 or older to sign up. urbanranks isn't directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If a child signed up, email privacy@urbanranks.com and we'll delete it.
Changes will be posted here with a new effective date. Effective November 4, 2026.
